o   Each student will be able to identify current/contemporary issues impacting the international travel industry, or shows how historical approaches are relevant to contemporary issues (i.e., World Peace, Human Rights, Climate Change, Fair Trade, etc.)
  • If Haiti’s growth and future success could be attributed to one thing, it would be the international travel industry. Their fragile economy clings to international fair trade and international tourists. Producing fair trade products to be shipped internationally boosts their work force and their economy. Similarly, International tourism to Haiti pulls money into the country without too much of it leaving.

o   Each student will be able to identify the different perspectives existing within an international country.(perspectives of the host community residents, locally owned travel businesses, national/government agencies, global corporations, and/or the international tourist).
  •  After traveling to Mexico a few times it easy to see there are many different perspectives depending on where they stand. For instance, a locally owned travel business near the beach knows there are ten other companies trying to sell the same thing. This capitalistic economy pushes each company to continually lower their prices as much as possible to ensure they get the business. At the end of the day the only one to really benefit is the tourist. They got the product without paying the full price. Then global corporations in the country are angry because none of the touring companies are working toward protection those beautiful natural resources because they just do what they need to get by for the day.

o   To understand sustainable tourism development and contemporary tourism issues from a global community perspective.
  • The line between sustainable and contemporary tourism is a thin one. For example, Machu Piccu is the hidden city in Peru built out of the side of the mountain. It’s a man-made wonder of world and draws millions of tourists to Peru every year. However, those millions of people trod through and those footsteps are degrading the amazing city more and more everyday. Therefore, serious conservations have been placed to enhance sustainability of this city in the clouds so that it can continue to be a destination for many years to come.

o   Each student will be able to effectively communicate in written form, specifically revise a minimum of 2 written reflections incorporating the instructor's feedback and comments from the writing team.
  • As I read through my blogs from this semester, I think it’s clear I can effectively communicate through writing. My blogs are informative, compelling, and appealing to the eye.
  • Revising papers has come always easy for me. I take criticism well because I know the advice will improve my writing skills. Also, after having a professional read through my work it offers fresh ideas and look through new eyes. My first revision after instructor feedback was my opening statement and about me. I wasn’t really writing for the correct audience in my first piece. I also got feedback on my last blog about making information important to people in regards to the adoption of a Haitian child. I originally just gave my readers some statics and thought that would suffice. However, I was given feedback on how to create meaning behind the numbers in ways that would be more important to my readers.

o   Each student will demonstrate the effective use of technology to improve their writing and speaking. Students will need to demonstrate how they have utilized the online resources to improve their writing skills, incorporate photographs from the Internet, information from electronic journals, and online experts to improve and broaden their perspectives as indicated by the quality of their written and oral communication, and multi-media presentations.
  • Technology has been an immensely useful tool throughout the creation of this blog and my entire service learning project. For one our first assignments, we were asked to look for research articles on the topic we would like to do our project on. Having online research databases cut the possible work load of this assignment in half and really helped me narrow down what wanted to study for the rest of this semester. I was also introduced to many other forms of communication through technology. The world continues to bound forward in regard to technology and so does the social world and how we communicate. In this class we learned how to use blogs, popular social media sites like pinterest, and graphic design websites like pikchograph.com. Before this course I had never blogged before or had any clue how to blog, even though huge populations use this form of communication to express ideas, give information, and for the pure enjoyment of writing. In conclusion, without technology, this class would not be possible.

o   Each student will demonstrate their ability to adapt his or her speaking and writing to different audiences and purposes (i.e., from the perspectives of the host community residents, locally owned travel businesses, national/government agencies, global corporations, and/or the international tourist).

o   Each student will effectively incorporate suggestions provided by the writing team, teaching assistant, instructor, and writing center to improve their effective writing and communication skills (i.e., demonstrating improvement in the use of syntax and mechanics of American English in written and oral work).

Each student will effectively utilize multiple forms of writing and communication (i.e., written reflections, Microsoft Powerpoint or Corel Presentation slide shows, outline for discussion, debate, evaluation, and online reflection
